BOND MEASURE WOULD HELP DISABLED VETERAN SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS

SPRINGFIELD, IL - State Senator Michael Bond (D - Grayslake) today announced the passage of a bill in committee that would help disabled veterans who own small businesses receive government contracts.

Senate Bill 206 as amended creates a task force to set goals and determine appropriate procedures for giving disabled veterans preference when bidding on state contracts.

“It is important we support the men and women who have served our country,” Bond said. “This task force will help us determine how best to encourage the growth of disabled veteran-owned businesses, while providing us an avenue to recognize their tremendous sacrifices.”

The bill supports the goals of the veteran’s assistance program started in 2008 by the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Veterans Business Development. The program provides training, networking services and other assistance to disabled veterans who own small businesses. One of its major components is helping disabled veterans successfully compete for state and local government contracts.

Bond’s Senate Bill 206 also requires annual reports to the state legislature on the number of veterans seeking government contracts, and whether the state meets goals set by the task force.

The bill now awaits a vote by the full Senate.
