BOND DEMANDS TRANSPARENCY FOR ILLINOIS PROPERTY ASSESSMENTS

SPRINGFIELD, IL— State Senator Michael Bond (D – Grayslake) announced the unanimous passage through the Senate of a bill to ensure fairness and transparency during the property tax assessment process.

Senate Bill 207, also known as the Homestead Assessment Transparency Act, is similar to a measure Bond sponsored last year. The previous bill received bipartisan support in the Senate, but failed to pass the full General Assembly after it was caught up in the political dispute between the General Assembly and the former governor.

“This is an important step in ensuring homeowners have the information they need during the property assessment process,” Bond said. “This legislation will give homeowners the tools they need to determine if they’re being fairly assessed.”

The bill would increase the amount of information homeowners receive each year about their property assessments. For instance, the annual “blue cards” would now show residents how their assessment compares with others in the neighborhood and township.

“This legislation will allow homeowners in Lake County and throughout Illinois to more clearly understand the property tax assessment process,” Bond said. “Even with home prices falling, assessments are still rising in many parts of the state. In this tough economic climate, it’s important residents know whether or not they are being taxed fairly.”

Bond had worked on the legislation with Grayslake-based Citizen’s Action Project, or CAP, a not-for-profit group formed in January 2007 by a group of homeowners concerned about the property tax assessment process in Lake County.
