BOND MOVES SCHOOL SAFETY MEASURE OUT OF SENATE
Legislation allows schools to expand safety program funding
SPRINGFIELD, IL The Illinois State Senate passed a measure today that could send more money to school safety programs.
Under the current law, school districts receive a portion of the fine collected for speeding violations in school safety zones. However, they can only use this money for safety education programs and the purchase and maintenance of cautionary lights.
State Senator Michael Bond (D Grayslake) is sponsoring Senate Bill 75 to allow school districts to use the revenue generated from the fines for the Safe Routes to School Program and any other initiatives that fall under the School Safety and Educational Improvement Block Grant Program.
We want to expand the definition of the law to encompass all areas of school safety, Bond said. This bill will allow the schools to use the money for new crosswalks, bicycle safety instruction, security cameras and other important resources.
The Safe Routes to School program is designed to encourage children to safely walk and bike to school. Last year, Illinois was only able to fund 10 percent of applications to the program. Senate Bill 75 will allow the state to better fund these initiatives.
The bill passed the Senate 57-0-2. It now moves to the House for further consideration.
